About Runable
Runable builds an AI agent that helps small businesses run day-to-day operations across web, mobile, desktop, and messaging. It can build and deploy websites and apps, create documents and slides, browse the web, and complete long-running work in secure sandboxes.
We are a small team, so engineers work across the product and infrastructure. Titles are useful; shipped work is more useful.
About the role
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will set technical direction for Runable's most important systems and ship the critical parts yourself. You will work across the agent runtime, durable execution platform, infrastructure, and customer-facing product.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You will lead through architecture, code, and production outcomes.
What you'll do
- Set and evolve the architecture for the agent runtime, execution platform, and core product systems.
- Lead cross-cutting projects from an ambiguous problem through design, implementation, rollout, and measurement.
- Write and review critical production code, build prototypes, and debug difficult failures.
- Define standards for reliability, performance, cost, security, and observability.
- Help engineers make better technical decisions through design reviews, code review, and mentoring.
- Partner with the founders, product team, and customers to turn business needs into durable systems.
What we're looking for
- A track record of leading and operating high-impact production systems as an individual contributor.
- Strong hands-on experience with backend and distributed systems, data modeling, APIs, and infrastructure.
- The ability to move between system design and implementation without losing the important details.
- Product judgment and a clear view of the tradeoffs between speed, quality, and complexity.
- Clear written and verbal communication across engineering and product decisions.
- High ownership and the ability to make progress when the problem is not neatly specified.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI agents, model orchestration, evaluations, or sandboxed execution.
- Experience with durable workflows, multi-tenant infrastructure, or high-volume systems.
- Familiarity with TypeScript, Postgres, Redis, DBOS, Cloudflare, or GCP.

- Agents produce a lot of our code; engineering judgment still decides what reaches production.
- We prefer small changes and proven systems over speculative architecture. Boring technology is welcome when it works.
